The Mid-America Ford Performance And Shelby Meet - Oklahoma's OK!
When is the last time you saw a Boss 429 towed off a road course? Don't worry, it was nothing more serious than a hung-up shifter linkage. Bosses and Shelbys may be worth a lot of money these days, but that doesn't stop owners in Oklahoma from putting their cars on the track.
Shannon Guderian, owner of Latemodel Restoration Supply in Waco, Texas, put on quite a show with his 2000 Cobra R during the late-model feature race at Hallett. Shannon came from near the back of the pack to pass all the front-runners for the win.
You never know what you might stumble across in the Mid-America hotel parking lot. This '70 Boss 302, a rare 4.30 Drag Pack car with unusual Bright Gold Metallic paint, was for sale with the sign in the window asking $54,900 or "interesting Ford/Mercury trade."
Mid-America's roving swap meet, which moves from Hallett to the dragstrip to the hotel parking lot, is always a treat for anyone in search of used parts or neat memorabilia.
What better place to showcase new Shelbys than a Shelby meet? Ford, a perennial Mid-America sponsor, brought out a number of new GT500s, including a convertible, for display. A lucky few got to drive a GT500 on the road course.
You know the Mid-America Shelby Meet is in town when the Tulsa Hilton Southern Hills lobby is filled with Fords. This year, a new California Special Mustang was flanked by a pair of concours '67 Shelbys.
The Hilton lobby also featured one of the most impressive displays we've ever seen at a Mustang or Shelby show. Restoration shop R&A Motorsports set up a display of concours-restored Mustangs engines, including this '69 428 Cobra Jet, along with a 289 Hi-Po, 428 Police Interceptors (as used in '67 and '68 Shelby GT500s), a 289 Cobra, and others.
Mid-America founder and all-around good-guy Jim Wicks was all smiles at Hallett on Friday afternoon. For Jim, it was his 32nd year of staging the event.
Sunday's car show in the Hilton parking lot was a jammed-packed affair surrounded by a swap meet and manufacturers like Shelby Automobiles, Unique Performance, Ford Racing, Steeda, and CarFX.
