To celebrate the 45th anniversary...
To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Mustang, the crew at Carlisle made a valiant effort to line up one Mustang from every year of production, from 19641/2 to 2010. There were a few missing model years, no doubt due to some car owners not making the trip to Carlisle due to Friday's nasty weather.
There are two things for certain at the All-Ford Nationals-it's either going to rain or it's going to be hot. Sometimes both. At this year's show, held over the June 5-7 weekend at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the rain rolled in on Friday morning and continued throughout the day, putting a drenching on our Pony Trails cruise and bringing out the umbrellas and hay ground-cover at the Carlisle Fairgrounds. But when the rain moved out overnight, it left us with a sunny and warm-but thankfully not hot-Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the Carlisle swap meet, car show, and special displays.
While only the die-hard swappers weathered the Friday storm to search for the early-bird swap meet deals, seemingly everyone came out on Saturday. The midway aisles were packed most of the day and there was very little green (and soggy) grass to be seen in the car show area. By mid-day, you couldn't find a seat at the grandstand food court. With Friday a rain-out and Sunday typically a travel-home day for many, attendees scurried to see everything on Saturday, a Mustang and Ford smorgasbord that included the huge car show, swap meet, manufacturers' area, Ford's Drive One tour with the Mustang Garage, cars for sale, Building T Invitational displays, Mustang 45th anniversary line-up, Ford GT Reunion, and a '59 celebration with a focus on retractable Skyliners.
Rainy Day Trails
In the nearly ten years of Pony Trails at CJ Pony Parts, we've had minor drizzles and annoying fog. But this year, we had rain. Not heavy, just constant. The rain fell from the time we arrived at the CJ Pony Parts showroom just outside Harrisburg to the end of the Trails near the Carlisle Fairgrounds. I don't recall ever being involved with a Pony Trails where it rained for the entire cruise.
Still, 50 to 60 brave and determined Pony Trails die-hards assembled at CJ Pony Parts on Friday morning. Instead of milling around the parking lot per usual, everyone crammed inside the dry showroom for coffee, doughnuts, and tours of the CJ facility by owners Creed Stammel and Jay Zeigler. This year, trailmasters Jeff Bliemeister and Jim Krupa planned a shorter cruise than usual-probably a good thing due to the weather- taking us through the hills north of Harrisburg for a 90-minute ride to Carlisle so participants could get an early start at the swap meet or show. The soggy Trail ended at Village Park, just north of Carlisle's Gate 5.

It seems like late-model Mustangs are taking over the Mustang show fields these days. At the All-Ford Nationals, the '79-'10s had the '65-'78s outnumbered by about four to one.

As always, Carlisle provided a car wash area next to the show field. We found Chris and Julie Beacock cleaning up their yellow '03 Cobra convertible after their wet drive down from Ontario, Canada.

Carlisle's Building T Invitational...

Carlisle's Building T Invitational Display always includes some interesting Mustangs, but even Carlisle was surprised to get this one. Just two weeks before the All-Ford Nationals, Dr. John Mansell pulled his '641/2 Mustang out of a 31-year storage. The black convertible was the fourth production Mustang, VIN 100004, and was one of 12 Mustangs used for Ford's Magic Skyway ride at the 1964 New York World's Fair. Dr. Mansell has owned the car since 1965. Watch for this historic Mustang's story in next month's issue.

Ford's sideways '10 Mustang has been a hit at shows around the country. At Carlisle, this attendee was caught nosing around the undercarriage.

While the All-Ford Nationals incorporates a huge car show and manufacturers' area, many enthusiasts come to Carlisle specifically for the swap meet. These guys headed home with a pair of monster tailpipes for their homebuilt project.

Don Fezell is well-known for his collection of '681/2 Cobra Jet race cars, including Phil Bonner's "Daddy Warbucks" car. Now he's also adding Ford Racing's '09 FR500CJ Mustangs to his stable, this one with "Daddy Warbucks" lettering as well.

Longtime readers will remember Bill Herndon's classified ads from Mustang Monthly's classified section in the 1980s and 1990s. He's still in business as Bill Herndon's Pony Warehouse, where he specializes in the restoration of vintage Mustang steering wheels.

If you ever wanted a super-sweet, low-mileage first generation Mustang, then you missed out on this 40,000-mile hardtop in the Carlisle Cars for Sale area. The sign in the window explained, "Sold 7/27/64 to a nurse in Connecticut. When she passed away in the 1980s, she left the car and her home to a church. At that time, the car had 33,500 miles." As of Saturday afternoon at Carlisle, it was still unsold.

Mustang IIs are always well represented at Carlisle. Vaughan Kipe's '78 Ghia and Dale Love's '78 King Cobra were two of the best at this year's show.

It would be worthwhile to buy a yellow Mustang just to be able to hang out with the Yellow Mustang Registry group. In addition to their eye-popping lineup of 41 yellow Mustangs in the show field, their Caribbean-themed club tent was named the "Coolest Club Hangout" at the 2009 All-Ford Nationals. They were also partying into the night at our hotel, where the parking lot looked like a Chiquita display at the grocery store.

Thanks to signage in the window, we learned that Robert Larmouth's '68 GT hardtop had been part of our original Vintage Rides feature in the July 2004 issue. That's his then-girlfriend and now-wife, Jan, sitting on his '68 GT hardtop in March 1973. The current '68 GT is an identical replacement after Robert sold the first one many years ago.

Sam Auxier Jr. was in Building T with his former '69 Mustang drag car, now owned by Bob Leenstra. Many attendees recognized the red, white, and blue fastback thanks to the feature in June '09 Mustang Monthly, which Bob prominently displayed in front of the car.

Not only could you show your late-model Mustang at Carlisle, you could get it modified at the same time at Ford Racing's Mustang Garage. The portable display with lift installed exhaust systems, cold-air kits, and other parts from the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog.
