100 Smiles Per Gallon
Like most of us, Joe Castrovellari from Emmaus, Pennsylvania, couldn’t afford a real Shelby. So he built his own tribute. Starting with a ’66 fastback, Castrovellari installed the usual Shelby mods—lowered A-arms, larger sway bars, scoops, etc.—but also added his own unique touches like blue and white interior, sequential taillights, and G.T. 350SC graphics. The engine is a 347 stroker that puts out over 400 hp with a B&M supercharger, an Edelbrock carb, and Doug Thorley headers. Castrovellari has a favorite saying for his Mustang: “It may not get great gas mileage but I get 100 smiles per gallon!”
Beauty and Beast
Eric Goldstein from Chatham, New Jersey, has managed to corral a pair of high-performance Mustangs. The “beauty” is the ’65 K-code convertible with 34,000 miles and matching numbers 289 High Performance engine. For the “beast,” Eric acquired a 43,000-mile ’68½ GT fastback with the 428 Cobra Jet and Highland Green exterior, one of only 59 produced with that engine/color combination. “It’s a tough choice in terms of which car to take cruising on any given day,” Eric says. “They are both extremely fun to drive in their own ways.”
Now in Spain
It’s always fun to hear about former Mustang Monthly feature cars. In the case of this ’66 GT fastback, which was owned by Doug Cooper when featured in our March 1992 issue, the Mustang has sailed across the Atlantic to Barcelona, Spain, where Juan Aloy is the current owner. According to the 1992 article, original owner James Quattlebaum special ordered the car in International Orange to match the western style of his Mustang Inn restaurant in Virginia Beach. Before leaving the states, the car was also featured in the Mustang Club of America’s 1991 calendar and Jerry Heasley’s Mustang Chronicle book. “It’s a real head-turner in Barcelona,” Juan tells us. “My son has forbidden me to sell it!”
Bill Smith is a big fan of the V-6 Mustang. His ’09 Mustang convertible is a rolling confirmation of the modifications that can be performed on the base Mustang to make it a good-looking and fun performer. For the exterior, Smith has added a GT Style grille and foglights, smoked decklid panel, CDC chin spoiler, sequential taillights, and chrome Bullitt-style wheels. Added performance comes from BBK cold-air intake and 70mm throttle body, BAMA custom tune, Flowmaster axle-back exhaust, 3.73:1 gears, and Eibach anti-roll and sway bar kit. Smith plans to add BBK shorty headers this year.
