Unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the 2014 Shelby GT brings back the best-selling Shelby Mustang of all-time. During ’07 and ’08, Shelby sold over 8,000 Shelby GTs, which were based on the GT-H Hertz Shelby rental car from ’06. They are still coveted by Shelby collectors.
“The Shelby GT was one of the most important vehicles in modern day Shelby history,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “It kicked off Shelby’s rebirth in Las Vegas by putting a Mustang-based small block car into Ford dealerships. Ever since the Shelby GT went out of the production, people have clamored for its return.”
Well, it’s back. Following the same formula as the original Shelby GT, the newest version is enhanced with a Ford Racing suspension, Borla exhaust, larger brakes, 20-inch wheels and tires, and unique looks with silver stripes, a special hood, front fascia, and grille. For the base model, a revised tune for the Coyote 5.0-liter engine takes power up a notch, from 420 to 430. But for thrill-seekers, Shelby offers the Shelby GT/SC, a supercharged version with either 525 or 624 horsepower.
As a post-title program, any ’11-’14 Mustang GT in any color is eligible for the Shelby GT upfit. And like the original Shelby GT, the price is right – starting at $14,995 for the GT and $27,995 for GT/SC, not including the base vehicle. “Based on the standard Mustang GT, the total cost of our entry-level 2014 Shelby GT is only about $45,000, yet offers so much more than the previous model,” said, Gary Patterson, Shelby American VP of Sales. A number of options are available, including Shelby Wide Body kit. The conversions take place at the new Shelby American facility in Las Vegas.
