In the early 1990s, Joe Sullivan helped his father restore a red 1973 convertible. Then his father sold it. “I was so bummed out,” Joe says. “When the kids finished college, I went hunting for one for myself.” Joe ended up buying a red ’73, a former Mustang Monthly feature car (November 2001) that was restored by then-owner Mike Little. Powered by a Q-code 351 Cobra Jet, the convertible still looks great, especially after Joe added 15-inch Magnum 500s and radial tires. The car now resides in Joe’s specially-built two-car garage in Northboro, Massachusetts.
An undercarriage photo on the cover of National Parts Depot’s 2001 catalog convinced Mike Bonacker to restore his daily-driver 1967 GTA hardtop. “Finally, after seven years, it is done!” Mike says. “The photo of Rick Schmidt’s ’67 GTA undercarriage inspired me to perform a complete ground-up restoration in my garage.” A resident of Hudson, New York, Mike says the A-code GTA has been in his family for 30 years.
Longest Fastback Owner
In last month’s Pony Express, we learned that Jim and Ila Liner purchased their ’65 Mustang in November 1964, possibly making them the longest continuous owners of a Mustang fastback. Their story goes back to 1963 when the couple moved to Houston in a non-A/C Corvair. In July 1964, they traded the Chevy for a ’64½ Mustang convertible—with A/C—but three months later it was totaled in an accident. The Liners replaced it with a recently introduced fastback in Champagne Beige. The Mustang currently has 210,000 miles and is still driven to local shows.
Great-Aunt Mustang Lover
Helen Kramer may be 91 years-old, but that doesn’t stop her from admiring her great-nephew’s 500-horsepower 2003 SVT Cobra convertible. “She and her husband, who passed away last year, owned an early ’70s Mach 1,” says Cobra owner Kevin Parrett from Kentucky. “She’s a total musclecar lover! It is definitely unique for a 91-year-old to be so into Mustangs.”
Let us hear from you.
