Let's get this straight right away. Any vintage Mustang convertible is a desirable car, especially on a bright sunny day, wind in your hair, a hearty Ford V-8 (or straight-six) pushing you down the road. You get the idea.
Scott Steiner does just that around his Manheim, Pennsylvania, home with this big-body Mustang creampuff, a sanitary '71 convertible that's been refinished in its original Medium Metallic Green. As the owner of an auto-detailing center, Scott has little trouble keeping this early '70s vintage Mustang looking new.
What's unusual is the relationship he's had with it since he was just 10 years old. Now 39, Scott told us the story.
"When I was in the fifth grade in 1972, I remember one of the school's fifth-grade teachers driving this car every day. She eventually sold it to a middle-school principal at the Manheim Township School District."
Scott, now the third owner, bought the car from him about eight years ago. So the car has been in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, since it was new in 1971.
Scott added some neat goodies to make it an even better example of the final body style of '65-'73 Mustangs. They include a front spoiler, a dual exhaust system with DynoMax mufflers, and a set of 15x7-inch Magnum 500 wheels with BFG Radial T/As at the corners.
The tires' generous sizes, a pair of 235/60R15s up front and slightly wider and taller 245/60R15s in back, make the car look good and give it the ideal stance. Before it was repainted by Myers Auto Body in Manheim, the shop replaced both rear quarter-panels to get the body back in tiptop shape for show-and-shine duty at events such as the All-Ford Nationals in nearby Carlisle.
Factory options ordered by the fifth-grade teacher include knit-vinyl bucket seats, power steering, tilt steering wheel, power front disc brakes, console, tinted glass, and interior and exterior dcor groups.
Although the 302 two-barrel engine and C4 automatic are original, they may soon be freshened up after providing more than 110,000 miles of faithful service. Scott reports the car still runs and drives just fine, partly because the three owners treated it with plenty of TLC.
After owning an '89 Fox-body 5.0 LX, Scott's first vintage Mustang is clearly one-of-kind, with memories that are, well, priceless.
