68 GT500KR - Authentically Perfect

Four-speed KRs came with staggered rear shocks. The Shelby was equipped with original-style Koni shocks, dated from 1968, although Jim isn't sure if they were originals or replacements. They were rebuilt internally and restored externally. Notice the transverse muffler, as used on all '68 Mustangs.

The differential is also painted with red-oxide primer.

The KR was still equipped with its original 428 Cobra Jet engine when it arrived at Shelby Parts and Restoration. The 80,000-mile engine was rebuilt with a few minor upgrades, including an enlarged oil pump opening in the block and stainless valves with hardened seats for today's fuels. Jim restored the original air cleaner assembly.

The '68 Cobra Jet Mustangs, including the GT500KR, were equipped with a starter relay mounted over the solenoid. If the engine didn't fire, it provided a delay before the starter could be engaged again to allow the flywheel to stop turning to prevent damage. Jim found an N.O.S. relay for the KR. "It was so pretty, I almost hated to put it on the car."

If a glossy finish is your idea of perfect paint, then the Highland Green paint on the KR is not perfect. In an effort to duplicate the factory paint, it has just the right amount of orange peel. All the windows were replaced with new glass, rescripted with the correct date codes.

Amazingly, the dashpad is original. "For some reason, the '67-'68 dashpads don't have the cracking problem like other vintage Mustangs," Jim says.
