The Mustang was a purpose-built race car, but it had a full interior supplied by YearOne, including carpet and headliner. The 8-point rollcage, 5-point harnesses, fire extinguisher, window nets, Shelby gauge pod, and Terra-Trip rally computer are pure function. Like the original Shelbys, the rear seat was removed and replaced with a spare tire.
Adventure. That's what it's all about. Whether it's the great pilgrimage to Bonneville or spending a weekend driving back roads looking for a possible barn find, adventure is where you find it. Getting to the fairgrounds early and scoring a parking spot under the tree? No, it's about how you had to strap the come-along to a tree to get the car out of the berries when you found it.

AutoInstruments owner Gentry Zentmeyer was one of the two drivers. He "recalibrated" the speedometer from MPH to KPH to help navigate Newfoundland's metric roads and the Terra-Trip rally computer.
Chip Brunner and Gentry Zentmeyer competed in the 2004 La Carrera Pan Americana race in a stock class '53 Studebaker. The following year, someone wanted the Stude worse than they did, and they found themselves without a race car. By 2006, the need for adventure was there again, and the Targa Newfoundland seemed like the perfect venue. Chip and Gentry bought and prepped a '65 Mustang fastback for the 2006 race; we got to tag along

1965 Mustang Fastback Photo289 Hi Po Engine
Rules dictate original engines and equipment, with few improvements allowed. Holman Moody built the Hi-Po 289 with vintage Hi-Po heads, aluminum intake, Holley carb, and tri-Y headers. By the end of day three, we'd have given anything for a set of those cheesy T-bolt valve cover fasteners.

1965 Mustang Fastback Tool Kit
A tool kit, tow strap, secured jack, and box of roadside safety triangles in the trunk are mandated by the rules. We used all of them more than we would have liked.

1965 Mustang Fastback Skid Plates
Race cars are usually lowered for better handling, but Targa Newfoundland cars should be stock height to clear road hazards. Previous races have proven the need for oil-pan protecting skid plates. We didn't have one when we hit town, but found a shop and had one fabricated the day before the race.
