The retaining ring has tabs on it that allow it to seat into place. Try to seat it all the way to be sure it doesn't come out. Complete the procedure by reconnecting the fuel line and plugging in the gauge wire. You might have to slightly trim the wire boot to allow the wire to plug into the new sending unit. We did this on our car; a minor issue that we solved in a few seconds. View Related Article
