Ford Mustang Brother's Performance Electric Fuel Pump

In our case, the body was raised off the fuel tank.

The evaporative emissions line is disconnected next. Now is a good time to replace the evaporative emissions canister located in front, beneath the battery.

The fuel pump and fuel tank sending units are removed the same as with classic Mustangs. A stamped steel retaining ring holds both pump and sending unit, which are two different assemblies in '86-'04 Mustangs. The ring is turned counterclockwise for removal and clockwise for installation. Use a screwdriver against the ring tabs and mallet, as shown, to loosen the ring.

The fuel pump is removed as shown on the right side.

The fuel tank sending unit is separate from the pump and pickup. This is a good time to replace it as well.

The electric fuel pump is mounted in this bracket assembly. Two screws retain the pump. Remove the screws, then disconnect the fuel line and power leads.

Power leads are color coded for correct identification. Red is positive and black is negative ground. Cut these leads and give yourself enough room for the new pump.

Although you can use simple butt connectors to attach the new pump to existing leads, Brothers Performance suggests you solder them, then wrap in heat shrink for protection. You don't even have to use heat shrink, but instead fuel resistant hose around each connection along with a zip-tie for security.

The new BBK pump is secured as shown with wiring protected with fuel resistant hose. This keeps the positive lead from grounding out.

The fuel filter sock is installed prior to pump installation. This prevents the pump from ingesting foreign matter.

Pump and sock are installed, then O-ring and retainer. The O-ring should be lubricated prior to installation.

Now you can install the new pump into the fuel tank.

After reinstalling the pump and sender, reconnect the evaporative emissions hose. Check the hose for rotting and deterioration. Reinstall the fuel tank. Cycle the ignition switch on and off to purge air, then start the engine. Expect the engine to misfire until all air has cleared the system.
