In Search of Mustangs
First in a Multipart Series About 100001Have you ever wondered where 100001 of each model year from each plant went? Thanks to Kevin Marti of Marti Auto Works, we now know the answer. We'll share with you the results of Kevin's diligent efforts with Ford Motor Company throughout many years. Ford has allowed Kevin access to the records of 22 million Ford vehicles from the '67 to '73 model years. Kevin's goal from the start was to obtain this information and share it with vintage Ford enthusiasts as an affordable service via Marti Auto Works. For Kevin, this information did not come free of charge from Ford. He has made substantial financial and personal sacrifices in order to make this information available to all of us who love vintage Fords, Mercurys, and Lincolns. If you own a '67-'73 Ford, Mercury, or Lincoln, you can order the original build and sales information from Marti Auto Works.
Now for the fun part. In our monthly column, we'll give you the results of Kevin's hard-won efforts. We'll go inside the vast database at Marti Auto Works and have a ball finding some of the most interesting Mustang builds you have ever witnessed. This month we'll talk about 100001 for 1967 at all three U.S. Mustang assembly plants. What Kevin has unearthed may surprise you.
Let's begin with 7F02S100001, 7R03S100001, and 7T03C100001. Number One for 1967 twice were convertibles, which kind of blows the theory, they never built convertibles first, out of the water. Oh yes, they did! One was a fastback. Two of them were 390 4V Hi-Po drop-tops. One was 289 2V-equipped. After that, it gets quite interesting.
Here's how 7F02S100001 stacks up:
| | Fastback |
| Body code | 63B | Interior Decor Group |
| Color code | M | Wimbledon White |
| Trim code | 6D | Light/Dark Blue Vinyl |
| Date code | 04G | 4 July 1966 |
| DSO code | 89 | Transportation Services |
| Axle code | D | 3.25:1 Equa-Lok |
| Transmission code | U | C6 Cruise-O-Matic |
This generously appointed Mustang drop-top was built at Dearborn with the GT Equipment Group, the Interior and Exterior Decor Groups, a cooling package, the Convenience control panel, a console, Firestone F70 Wide Oval tires, Styled Steel wheels, a fold-down rear seat, an AM/eight-track stereo, a tachometer, a trip odometer, power steering, and even a very limited option we have never seen for 1967: a shoulder harness. Being a Dearborn unit, we're not surprised by its destination: the Ford Division General Office in Dearborn. No one knows for sure what this Mustang's purpose was; it appears to be a Ford exec. unit. One thing is certain: it has never surfaced in our data collection efforts during the past 20 years.
This leads us to 7T03C100001, the first unit scheduled for mass production at Metuchen, New Jersey, for 1967. It, too, is a well-optioned Mustang unit.
