3 Slide the drum off the spindle to expose the inner workings of the drum brakes. You will need two special tools to make the drum brake repair easier. The first tool is used to remove or install the primary and secondary shoe retracting springs. Place the tool over the pivot pin and rotate the tool to allow the tip of the tool to disengage the spring from the pivot pin.
