Project '66 Side Glass Installation
17
Our quarter windows, like most, were in excellent mechanical shape due to limited use. We reused the quarter regulators and all the hardware. The only repairs we made were cleaning and painting the guide assembly, cleaning and polishing the quarter-glass frame, and installing a new quarter-glass seal (shown here).
18
Though the quarter glass and guide must be removed and installed separately, we reassembled them on the workbench to make sure everything was well lubricated and worked smoothly. Once we were happy with the operation, the guide and glass were taken apart for reassembly into the car.
19
If you're replacing your beltline felts with new ones, make sure you install the outer felt before installing the quarter-glass guide and glass; otherwise, it will be difficult to get the felt behind the quarter glass.
20
Slide the quarter-glass guide into place and start the mounting/adjustment bolts. Don't tighten the guide yet, because you'll need to let the guide tilt inwards at the top to allow the glass to be installed.
21
Slide the quarter glass into place on the guide's tracks, then begin your adjustments. The upper and lower glass stops are adjustable, as well as the tilt of the glass (via the guide mounting bolts). Again, work patiently to get the best fit. Once your quarter glass is adjusted, you can reinstall the regulator.
22
Since our roof-rail weatherstrip was spankin' new, the glass alignment for a tight seal was fairly simple. Older seals that have a "memory" to them might be more frustrating. You want the glass to snug up to the seal as shown without pulling it out of the roof-rail channel. Once the quarter glass is adjusted, you can work on adjusting the door glass to match.
23
The quarter-window end seals were also replaced (as were all seals and gaskets) with new ones from CJ Pony Parts. Don't forget to install new water shields too.
24
The beltline felt on the inboard side of the quarter-panel is stapled to the quarter-trim panel from the factory. The old way of doing this repair was to simply rivet the new felt into place. The new kits, such as this one from CJ Pony Parts, come with a carbide drill bit and new staples to do the job correctly. The drill bit makes quick work of the task, then you simply slide the staples into place and bend them over with pliers. Looks just like factory!
25
Our quarter-trim panels were covered with black vinyl from a Virginia Classic Mustang Deluxe Interior kit some time ago and have been in storage waiting for this day. The Deluxe interior screw kit is from Virginia Classic Mustang as well.
