The tach signal simply connects to the negative side of the ignition coil (or tach signal of your EFI or ignition box) but the gray vehicle speed (VSS) wire is only used for OE-type VSS connections. However, it worked fine with the VSS signal provided by the Classic Instruments’ speed sensor installed for their electric speedometer. Rostra offers a couple of alternative VSS signal generators, including an inline sensor for the speedometer cable (similar to what Ford used) and a magnetic sensor that uses magnets attached to the driveshaft.
