How-To Install A Turn-Signal Switch In A '65-'66 Mustang
7:
After the screws and spring are out, this collar comes off to allow removal of the switch. Note the holes in it that the switch mounting screws pass through.
8:
To access the switch connectors under the dash, remove the two screws that hold the vent control and parking-brake handle in place.
9:
These are the wires coming from the steering column, which lead to the two connectors under the dash. Simply cut them with a pair of side cutters, since the new switch includes all new wiring up to the factory connector.
10:
Once the wires are cut, and before you pull the wires out of the column by fully removing the switch, attach a piece of scrap wire to one of the wires coming from the steering column. We wound the two wires together, then thoroughly secured them with masking tape.
11:
Once taped together, you can pull the old wires out from the column. The idea here is to have a piece of wire in the column so you can attach the new wires to the one still in the column and pull them back through the column again.
12:
The old switch wires are out of the column and the new switch has yet to be installed. But the one piece of spare wire is in place to avoid having to the thread the new wires through the column, which would be difficult. At a minimum, you would have to remove the column from the car to install the switch. This little trick saves a considerable amount of time and hassle.
13:
The new switch's wires are attached to the wire in the column and are ready to be pulled back through the column.
14:
As with the old wires, be sure the new ones are securely attached to the wire in the column so they don't come apart midstream. Carefully pull the wires through the column, helping them along by pushing as best you can from the top of the column.
15:
The wires are successfully pulled through the column and can be seen protruding out the bottom of it.
