One performance handicap is the Siamese center exhaust port for cylinders 3 and 4.

Jack Clifford's Performance...

Jack Clifford's Performance Products has a quick, weld-in answer called an exhaust port divider, which stops the turbulence between the two ports to improve flow. Weld it in, then do some port-grinding work for even smoother flow.

Long ago, you could buy an Offenhauser three-one-barrel setup for your 144/170/200ci six.

It consisted of a bolt-on,...

It consisted of a bolt-on, finned-aluminum manifold setup designed to accommodate three Holley or Autolite one-barrel carburetors. You had to bore two openings into the integral iron manifold for the two additional carburetors. Then, the Offenhauser aluminum manifold bolted onto the iron manifold.

Today, you can buy a new Offenhauser three-one-barrel intake manifold for 144, 170, and 200ci sixes. Like the three-one setup just mentioned, this is a bolt-on, finned-aluminum manifold plate designed for three one-barrel Holley or Autolite carburetors. All you need to do is bore the iron intake manifold for the two additional carburetors.

When you're shopping cylinder...

When you're shopping cylinder heads, always consider piston deck height and head-gasket thickness with the head torqued. The thinner your head gasket, the greater the compression because of the reduced chamber size. A thicker head gasket increases chamber volume, which reduces compression.

From '60 to '64, Ford sixes...

From '60 to '64, Ford sixes had mechanical, adjustable lifters, with cup-style pushrods and an adjustment screw in the rocker arms. During the '64 model year, Ford went to hydraulic lifters in the sixes, which changed the way the valvetrain looked and functioned. These are ball-style pushrods designed to mate with nonadjustable, shaft-mounted rocker arms. Simply tighten the rocker-arm assembly and forget it.

Jack Clifford's Performance...

Jack Clifford's Performance Products makes it possible to step up to two-barrel carburetion thanks to these carburetor adaptors, which make it possible to run the Autolite 2100 or 2150 two-barrel carburetors, as one example, on a 170/200/250ci six. You can run a Holley two-barrel as well. Weber carburetion is also available from Clifford, but it doesn't come cheap.

We like this finned, cast-aluminum...

We like this finned, cast-aluminum valve cover from Jack Clifford's Performance Products. It quiets the valvetrain with thick cast aluminum. It may also be stripped and polished, or powdercoated in your favorite color. Chromed steel valve covers are available from JMC Motorsports for Ford six-cylinder applications.

To stabilize valve operation,...

To stabilize valve operation, shaft-mounted roller rocker arms are available from Jack Clifford's Performance Products for the 144, 170, 200, and 250ci sixes.

One affordable modification...

One affordable modification from Jack Clifford is this high-quality, ceramic-coated header, a dual-exhaust version that fits well in a Mustang engine compartment.

It has heavy-duty flanges...

It has heavy-duty flanges and thick exhaust gaskets to ensure quiet operation. The ceramic coating keeps heat inside where it belongs.

Jack Clifford's Performance...

Jack Clifford's Performance Products has all of the goods for valvetrain performance. We suggest ordering your camshaft and valvetrain as a single, compatible kit. Double-roller timing sets are only necessary for high rpm. A stock timing set, with steel gears, works well for street use. It is recommended that you choose a camshaft with between 260 and 270 degrees of duration, with no greater than .420 inch of valve lift. The Ford Falcon Six Cylinder Performance Handbook has more camshaft selection information available.

Here is Jack Clifford's single exhaust header, which tends to buzz like a six. If you opt for dual exhaust and Flowmaster mufflers, it'll be hard to tell your six from a V-8 at the tailpipe. Would you believe the black coating is ceramic?

Check out this Hillborn injection setup from the early '60s for Ford sixes. Special attention is required here. It's not a simple bolt-on, but rather for race only.
Teasers From Australia and Clifford
For years, Australians have known about the great potential of the Ford six. Aussies are familiar with an aluminum crossflow head for 144, 170, 200, and 250ci sixes. What's more, it's happy with port fuel injection. Go to Mustang-Six@cfl.rr.com for more details.
Coming in the spring of 2004 is a crossflow aluminum cylinder head from Jack Clifford's Performance Products for 144, 170, 200, and 250ci Ford sixes. We'll have more information on this cylinder head when it arrives. Expect to see a buildup employing this cylinder head in Mustang Monthly.
