Ford Mustang Single Wire Alternator Install Mr AMP Alternator

A lot has changed since '65-'73 Mustangs first rolled off the Ford assembly lines. Back then, there wasn't much to worry about regarding power accessories-a radio, a heater blower, conventional headlamps, and maybe optional air conditioning-so Mustangs were fitted with 38-, 45-, 55-, and 65-amp alternators with external regulators. At the time, they could keep up with the demand.

Check out the Mr. AMP 130-amp alternator from Performance Distributors. We like the high-tech look and demeanor of what's basically a modern Nippondenso alternator, as used on new Fords. Performance Distributors custom crafts the alternator for vintage Fords. Everything is there for a professional installation.

Today, those low-amp Autolite and Motorcraft alternators struggle with modern high-amp sound systems, driving lamps, aftermarket air conditioning, electric cooling fans, and six-way power ashtrays, among other things. When they get hot, diodes pop, regulators clunk, and lights go out. That's why you need to consider the easy installation of a Mr. AMP single-wire alternator from Performance Distributors.

The 130-amp Mr. AMP single-wire alternator keeps a battery charged under all kinds of driving conditions. At idle, count on 65 amps of battery power, meaning lights stay bright and sound systems keep kicking. You can also forget about your Mustang's external voltage regulator, because this alternator is internally regulated with solid-state reliability. If you need greater charging capacity, Performance Distributors offers a Mr. AMP with 190 amps.

The 130-amp version retails for $245.65 in a V-belt design. A version setup for a serpentine belt fetches $220.15.

If you're seeking a more original appearance, Performance Distributors offers the Ford One-Wire Street Alternator. It makes 60 amps and uses its own solid-state voltage regulator. This Autolite/Motorcraft alternator offers reliability while keeping an original demeanor. A deep-groove pulley improves belt traction and alternator speed. The cost ranges from $135.15 for the 60-amp to $301.75 for a 140-amp.

Ford Mustang Single Wire Alternator Install Cable Installation
When we say "single-wire," this is what we're referring to. A single 6-gauge lead runs from the positive post on the solenoid to the alternator, with circuit protection along the way.

With an AMK Products hardware kit and stock alternator spacer, the Mr. AMP installation is a perfect fit that looks factory original. Make sure the positive post doesn't touch the block or any brackets.

Where the original Autolite/Motorcraft alternator is threaded for the adjustment bolt, Mr. AMP calls for a 5/16-inch bolt, a flat washer, a lock washer, and a nut. You can also use a fiber-style lock nut for added security. Keep in mind that you'll need a longer drivebelt because the pulley is larger.
Ford Mustang Single Wire Alternator Install Optima Red Cell Battery
Optimum Results
While you're busy going single wire, also consider switching to an Optima Spiralcell battery. The beauty of an Optima Red Top battery is its technology: a revolutionary six-cell design with incredible cranking capacity. What's more, the battery isn't vented, meaning it never leaks. Modern technology immobilizes the battery's internals, making it different than a conventional lead-acid battery. Because power demands have grown significantly during the past 40 years, you need a battery that can handle the load. If you're installing an Optima Red Top in a '65-'66 Mustang, you'll need to replace the battery tray and hold-down with a special tray and top hold-down available from California Mustang. They look like original equipment, except for its '67-and-up hold-down design.
Ford Mustang Single Wire Alternator Install Thermal Circuit Breaker
Power from and to the battery must pass through a circuit-protection device. This is the thermal circuit breaker included with the alternator. It opens the circuit should a short or overload occur. Never operate the alternator without it.
Ford Mustang Single Wire Alternator Install External Voltage Regulator Wiring
When you disconnect the factory alternator, there's no need to cut any wiring or remove the external voltage regulator, as disconnecting this plug disables the external voltage regulator. Keep it to maintain a factory original appearance.
