Here's a Romeo block marked... Here's a Romeo block marked with an "R" but not all are marked this way. This is why the casting number and date code are important. All Modular blocks have knock... All Modular blocks have knock sensor bungs. Most SOHC blocks have one knock sensor provision. Cobra blocks and SOHC service... Cobra blocks and SOHC service blocks have two knock sensor provisions. Not all Modular engines will have a knock sensor. The Modular engine is the... The Modular engine is the most rugged V-8 Ford has produced since the 427. Cross-bolted main caps and skirted block construction ensure stability. Romeo blocks have jackscrew main caps. Windsor blocks have dowels you tap into place for main cap security. All are cross-bolted. Because the Modular engine... Because the Modular engine has extremely precise tolerances, don't make light of the machining process. Make sure your machine shop understands what this engine needs. Fasteners must be torqued per Ford specifications. Torque-to yield (also known as Torque Angle) must be followed to the letter. Modular V-8s are cross-bolted... Modular V-8s are cross-bolted two possible ways. Romeo blocks have internal jackscrews that are adjusted and torqued to support both main caps and block skirts. Then, external cross bolts secure the package. Windsor blocks have taper dowels that are tapped in place once main caps are torqued. Then external cross bolts are torqued. Unlike older Ford V-8s, Modular... Unlike older Ford V-8s, Modular engines have aluminum shell bearings. This is more than adequate for a street engine. Tri-metal bearings are necessary only with high-performance applications. For all the hoopla and panic... For all the hoopla and panic over powdered metal connecting rods, these rods are as strong, or stronger, than the forged rods in a 428 Cobra Jet. They can be reconditioned with new bolts and be as good as new. If you're going to supercharge or run nitrous, you need forged Manley connecting rods. The standard SOHC oil pump... The standard SOHC oil pump is an outstanding piece for street use. A weak spot is rotors that don't always stand up to stress. Billet rotors are an improvement. Melling offers an excellent high-volume oil pump. The Cobra high-volume pump is also a good idea. You will need to modify the SOHC's pick-up if you install these high-volume pumps. The Modular engine's timing... The Modular engine's timing system consists of two chains, two sprockets, two tensioners, two guides, two tensioner arms, and a crank sprocket. Modular engines from '91-'99 have steel chain guides. From '00-up they have plastic guides. Earlier engines have iron tensioners. Later engines have composite tensioners. Never let the Modular engine... Never let the Modular engine intimidate you. Setting up timing chains and... Setting up timing chains and sprockets is easy.
