1966 Shelby Gt350 Pushrods
Jim Grubbs begins teardown by removing rocker arms and pushrods using a deep-well 5/8-inch socket, examining each piece for abnormal wear and misalignment issues. We won't be reusing the rocker arms or pushrods. Note the clean engine internals, void of excessive sludge because this engine always received liberal maintenance. Clean oil is an engine's greatest life insurance policy.

1966 Shelby Gt350 Manifolds
We are inundated with reproduction Cobra high-rise manifolds today, but this is the real deal-an S2MR-9424-B Buddy Bar casting from '65-'66. The Cobra high-rise was based on Edelbrock's F4B dual-plane high-rise of the period. Buddy Bar remains in business today making aluminum castings in Los Angeles. We will repair the cracks in this original intake and get it mediablasted. The Autolite 4100 carburetor will be rebuilt by a reputable local carb shop.

1966 Shelby Gt350 Mechanical Lifters
To remove the 289 Hi-Po's mechanical lifters, Jim Grubbs uses a tappet puller due to carbon deposits and wear at the bottom of the lifter.

1966 Shelby Gt350 Remove Lifters
We like Jim's lifter organizer, which is good for keeping order and inspecting lifters. The original lifters have normal wear patterns, but we'll replace them during the rebuild.

The harmonic balancer is removed next. This is the 289 High Performance balancer, C5OE-6316-A, which is 337/64 inches wide-wider than the standard 289/302 C5AE-6316-A1 and A2 balancers. JGM will have this balancer rebuilt with a new rubber absorber, which maintains authenticity.
