Howling FanI have a '66 Mustang with a 289 and have had the usual problems with the cooling system-that is, after driving on hot days the radiator spits a little coolant out of the overflow tube. So I installed a fan shroud along with a fan clutch and appropriate fan, which helped the overflow problem. However, now there is a pronounced howl coming from under the hood that varies with engine rpm. The fan I installed has six equally spaced blades. Would a fan with an odd number of blades with unequal spacing get rid of the howl?Paul KoglerVia the Internet
You are correct-the clutch creates a noise. However, they are quite efficient in spite of the noise. Unequally spaced fans are indeed quieter but still produce some unwanted sound. I suggest you use the car a bit more to be certain the overflow problem is indeed cured, then decide if a fan change is in order as the fixed-blade fan is not that much quieter.
Mirror, Mirror On The DoorI'm adding sport mirrors to my '70 SportsRoof. How do I locate the hole for the remote lever in my new standard door panel? Also, is there a source for the keyed special washer that's used with the bezel nut on the inside of the panel?Jim MerrittVia the Internet
The door should have a perforated knockout area where the remote mirror lever is located. The original Ford door panel does include the knockout and can also be used as a template if necessary. The location of the lever is determined by the doorframe, as there is a limited amount of open space on the frame for the lever assembly to pass through. A photo of a '70 interior and a quick study of the door frame will allow you to estimate the opening on the door panel if need be. Be sure to route the mirror cables away from the window glass as it is raised and lowered. Call Orlando Mustang at 407/688-1966, as they have repaired and restored remote mirrors for many years and can provide the unique washer.
