With the introduction of the '71 Mustangs, the 428 Cobra Jet was replaced by the 429, with its more modern, canted-valve design. However, the Cobra Jet name lived on as the 429 Cobra Jet and, in 1973, as the 351 Cobra Jet.

As you can tell from this '70 CJ Mach 1 prototype's hood decal, Ford was obviously planning to replace the 428 CJ with the 429 Cobra Jet for 1970. The engine change took place one year later.

For the street, the 428 Cobra Jet for 1968 was equipped with a new ram-air system. With a vacuum-operated flapper on top, the air cleaner opened into the hoodscoop at full throttle to take in colder outside air.

Although the 428 Cobra Jet was available in all Mustang GTs, the majority were fastbacks. The hoodscoop and black hood stripe were the only external giveaways.
