You are correct in your observation. The hood-to-fender-extension fit is usually a compromise at best. My observation is the extension is sloped more than the hood, resulting in the poor fit. Remember, only the Falcon was below Mustang for price and quality! They were not built like Lincolns.
SCJ IDIs there anything on the body tag or VIN that tells me if a '69 428 Mustang is an original Drag Pack car?Kent MagruderSnohomish, WA
The VIN will not tell you if a '69 428CJ is a factory Drag Pack, which included the oil cooler, capscrew connecting rods, modified crankshaft, and either 3.91 Traction-Lok or 4.30 Detroit Locker gears. The rear-axle tag and door tag will denote the 3.91 or 4.30 axle ratio. I'm not aware of any definite info on the build tag indicating oil cooler for the '69 Mustang. I would get a copy of the invoice or the Marti Report. Contact Marti Autoworks (12007 W. Peoria Ave., El Mirage, AZ 85335; 623/935-2558; www.martiauto.com) for additional info on the options.
Down to the KR DetailsI have a '68 Shelby GT500KR Mustang that I've restored to trailered concours standards. We are close to completion, with hopes of having it ready for the Mustang 40th Anniversary Celebration in Nashville. We have two concerns. What type of trunk mat is correct for the KR? Also, is the black on the back of the hood painted or is it a sticker?Bruce McGillisKnoxville, TN
In the trunk, the '68 GT500KR had the dark-gray spatter-paint mat with fabric backing, which is similar to the '69-'70-style trunk mat. The '68-'70 mats use some material and spatter colors. However, there are minor differences in the patterns due to the fold-down seat, body style, and so on. The blackout on the back of the hood is a sticker.
