Sprint 200I purchased a '66 coupe a few years ago, but the engine was different from the others I had seen. The air cleaner has a Sprint 200 decal. I was wondering if there was anything special about it. The VIN is 6R07T194823, with dataplate codes 65A Y 22 05E 74 3 6.Ryan CuculluAddress Withheld
The '66 Sprint package was part of the Millionth Mustang Success sale in the spring of 1966. Also called the "Sprint 200 Option Group," the limited-edition Sprint Mustang hardtops came with the 200ci six-cylinder and a group of special options, including a body-side accent stripe, a chrome air cleaner, an air cleaner Sprint decal, wire-style wheel covers, and a center console. This was a popular promotion during 1966 Mustang production.
Plastic ChromeI'm restoring a '67 coupe. The interior is in pretty good shape except for the dash trim, and the instrument bezel's chrome-like finish is worn in places. Is there a product or method to restore the finish to its original appearance without having to buy new pieces?John BranamJacksboro, TN
The plastic chrome can be replated. However, the process is expensive. If you're looking for total authenticity, replating is the way to restore. If you're looking for MCA concours standards, the reproductions are quite good and reasonably priced. If you want to restore it yourself, Plasti-Kote sells paint in a spray can called Bumper Chrome (615 Bumper Chrome) that has a chrome-like finish. The Plasti-Kote may be OK for a daily driver, but it's not acceptable for concours applications.
390 DetailingI want to bring my '67 S-Code GTA fastback to show-quality condition. The door data plate shows the following: 63B X 6U xxK 89 1 U. If I've decoded things correctly, this car was built in Dearborn, Michigan, in October 1966 as a Transportation Services car. I believe I'm the third owner based on the papers that came with the car. The car has the Thermactor emissions plumbing, but it isn't connected anywhere (e.g., the smog pump and some plumbing is missing). I read your how-to on detailing 428s.
How different is the detail work on a 390? Were DSO 89 cars ever sold through the dealerships?Pete CritikosColorado
The 390, 428, and 428CJ motors were detailed similarly. There are minor detail differences and small fittings on even 428CJ motors depending on date and even production shifts. If you follow the CJ engine-detailing article (Feb. '03), you will be MCA concours correct.
I know of a few DSO 89 cars that were sold at Ford dealers, mainly as demos later in the model year.
Spoiler HolesI have a question about the measurement of the holes, and their locations, for an original rear spoiler on the trunk lid of a '70 Mach 1. I have tried to search the Web, but with no luck. In Norway, there's a bit of a problem finding out such details, even with the approximately 2,000 Mustangs here.Lars-Petter KolkindNorway
The front edge of the spoiler pedestal is 7.75 inches from the front edge of the decklid, and the rear edge of the spoiler pedestal is 431/48 inches from the crown of the decklid. The pedestals are centered 211/42 inches from the side of the decklid. If you have an original spoiler, there are support brackets that bolt to the underside of the decklid. This will also help you locate the spoiler.
A Fit About FitI have a '70 Mustang. My question is not about my Mustang, but about all '70 Mustangs. Why is the hood fit so bad at the headlight buckets? When I was restoring mine, I realized it fit badly with no way to make it fit. I was puzzled. I went to a few shows, including the Yellow Rose Classic, and realized that even pristine, unrestored '70s were the same way. It looks like the hood is not closed all the way. Can you tell me and other readers why?Jim RamseySaginaw, TX
