Mach TiresI have a '69 Mach 1 with 14-inch Styled Steel wheels. What kind of tires should I get to keep the car original?Chris LawrenceVia the Internet
You have several choices. The most desirable is the Goodyear Polyglas GT F70x14 with raised white letters. This tire should be what's commonly called the no-size version, which means the tire size, F70x14, is not in raised white letters on the sidewall. During the middle of the '70 model year, the sidewall design was changed to also include the tire size in raised white letters.
The second choice available for '69 was either the E70x14 or F70x14 white sidewall tire. This tire was available from most major manufacturers, such as Goodyear, Firestone, Uniroyal, and BFGoodrich.
The third choice is the rare FR70x14 wide oval radial-ply white sidewall.
The Goodyear F70x14 Polyglas GT is available as a reproduction and is concours correct as standard or optional equipment for all Mach 1s. Check your owner's manual for additional tire specs if you want more information on engine tire-size combinations
Color of BlueI'm in the process of restoring a '67 Mustang hardtop with a 289 two-barrel carburetor, automatic transmission, and factory air. I was wondering what color to paint the engine, air-conditioning compressor, and firewall. There are several colors of Ford Blue, depending on the manufacturer. I like the Dupli-Color brand. What number or shade should I use?Josh O'BrianVia the Internet
The '67 Mustang engine color was Ford Corporate Blue; the mix code is Pitzler No. PAR 13358 for acrylic enamel. I don't keep up with spray-bomb colors because they seem to change with each can.
The A/C compressor is semigloss black. Krylon 1613 is a good spray-can color. It's also good for the engine's Corporate Blue if you prefer the spray can.
Spoiler LocationI'm adding a front spoiler to my '70 SportsRoof. How do I locate it on the front valance? Also, what is the size of the studs that hold the rear spoiler to the decklid? I was looking at a picture from a recent Resto Roundup and they look bigger than the ones on the rear spoiler that came on the car when I bought it. Mine are 11/44-20 studs.Jim MerrittVia the Internet
The '70 front spoiler has a location detent in the center that matches the bolt in the lower valance. Center the spoiler as close to the center bolt as possible, then work your way to the outer edges. Remember, front spoilers were dealer installed like antennas, so you may have some variation as to locations and hardware used.
The studs for '70 rear spoilers are 11/44-20.
Too-Tall TiresI have found a set of five Goodyear Polyglas H70x14 tires. Will they fit a '65-'66 Mustang? If so, with what type of rims? The tires with their rims were taken off when they were almost new and stored in a barn. They're in great shape, with no cracking of the sidewalls. They still have 90 percent or better tread.Kelly BennettVia the Internet
The H70x14 Polyglas GT tire is too wide and tall for a '66 Mustang, so you'll experience front clearance problems. The H70x14 was not a Mustang tire size. I believe some Rancheros used the H70x14.
Concours MachI'm one year away from my first major Mustang Club of America National show as a participant in the Concours Driven Class, and I have a few questions about my '69 Mustang Mach 1 with the 351W four-barrel carburetor and FMX auto transmission. I never found a buildsheet, but the car was manufactured in Metuchen around June 1969. It has the standard suspension, so the shocks are not staggered. It has been fully restored except for some minor details.
Are the shocks black in the back and front, and what color paint daubs go on them?
Should the Goodyear Polyglas GT tires have small, raised white letters in Polyglas GT only, with the tire size in black?
